We're In The Middle of It All!
Surratt House is conveniently located just four miles south of I-95 and ten miles from downtown Washington, D.C. In one hour, you can be in Baltimore. Colonial Annapolis is just 45 minutes away. Historic Alexandria, Virginia, and George Washington’s Mount Vernon are 30 minutes away. There’s lots to see and do in our vicinity, so plan to stay awhile.
Lodging ~~ Within a two-mile radius of our museum are three hotels. Colony South Hotel is a full-service facility with all the amenities from indoor pool and exercise room to restaurant and lounge. Get special rates if you mention Surratt House. Call 800-537-1147 for information. Also in the area are a Comfort Inn (301-856-5200/1-866-284-7891) and an EconoLodge (301-856-2800).
Do you like camping? Cosca Regional Park is just two miles from Surratt House and has a campground, nature center, play area, tennis courts, ball fields, and a lake with paddle boats. Call 301-868-1397 for reservations.
Other Attractions ~~ What else is there to do? The home of Dr. Samuel Mudd, where Booth sought medical attention is just thirteen miles away. Within ten miles, one can visit the peaceful, rural setting of the National Colonial Farm along the Potomac River, overlooking Mount Vernon. A short distance from that site is historic Fort Washington, with ties to the War of 1812, the Civil War, and World War II. Right around the corner from the Fort is Oxon Cove, a ca. 1920s working farm. The latter two sites are maintained by the National Park Service.
Prince George’s County ~~ Do you enjoy lovely old homes? His Lordship’s Kindness (ca. 1785) is just down the road from Surratt House. We are located in Prince George’s County, Maryland, which is rich in historical and cultural sites -- from the world’s oldest continuously operating airport (with a wonderful, interactive, 21st-century aviation museum) to colonial manor homes and churches, and Rosecroft Raceway - home to harness racing. If you’re a baseball fan, we’re home to the minor league Bowie Bay Sox; and, of course, FedEx Field, home of football’s Washington Redskins, is just twenty minutes from our museum.
Children ~~ If children are with you, you can always promise them a visit to Six Flags America. The amusement park is just a short distance away. And in our hip pocket is Andrews Air Force Base, home to Air Force One and host to the Armed Forces Open House each May. About forty minutes away is NASA Goddard, where you can tour and learn about our nation's space program. From plantations to planets -- we can supply the history. We’ll even help plan your itinerary.
Restaurants ~~ Have you worked up an appetite? Surratt House is surrounded by the standard chains -- Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Denny’s, Pizza Hut, Subway, and more. Wayfarer Restaurant in Colony South Hotel offers upscale fare, and The Fish Market is well-known for -- guess what -- seafood! Also within a two-mile radius are Mama Stella’s Italian/Greek Restaurant and Topolino’s, home to good Italian food. Seven miles south of Clinton is a large, commercial area known as Waldorf, with over sixty chain restaurants lining U.S. Route 301. There also is a major shopping mall there to tempt you. If you prefer charming boutiques and quaint shops, a quick trip across the infamous Woodrow Wilson Bridge will take you to all that Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, has to offer. That’s where George and Martha shopped back in the 1700s.
So come see us. We like to think that we are the front porch to the nation’s capital. Stay awhile and reminisce about the past or consider the future with us in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
