DR. SAMUEL A. MUDD HOUSE
A stop at Dr. Mudd’s house complements your Surratt House visit. The buildings and surrounding grounds have remained in the Mudd family and retain much of their original ambiance. You can see the red settee upon which John Wilkes Booth rested while Dr. Mudd examined his broken leg. There is the bedroom where Wilkes and David Herold slept. You can imagine Booth, with Herold’s help, hobbling down the narrow hallway stairs and outside. There they made their way along the dirt path into Zekiah Swamp as they resumed their flight.
To find Dr. Mudd’s House, take Route 5 South (Branch Avenue) to the Charles County line. Just after crossing the line, turn left on State Route 5 South, marked “Lexington Park and Leonardtown.” Follow Route 5 (Matawoman-Beantown Road) approximately three miles to Poplar Hill Road and turn left at the traffic light. Follow Poplar Hill Road approximately three miles to where the road splits. Bear right on Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Road. Dr. Mudd’s house is 4/10's of a mile on the right.
Dr. Mudd’s house is open to visitors from the first of April to the end of November on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the last tour starting at 3:30 p.m. An admission fee is charged.
