Surratt House MuseumA Victorian Herb Garden |
| The Hilltop Garden Club of Clinton, Maryland, setup the herb garden at Surratt House Museum when the museum opened in 1975.
The garden first was planted on the site where the kitchen is now. When the Surratt Society and the Maryland-National Parks & Planning Commission reconstructed the little kitchen wing, the garden was moved to its current site near the spring house. Hilltop Garden Club members did extensive research on Victorian gardens and published a booklet, “The Mary Surratt House Victorian Herb and Flower Garden,” when the garden was planted.
The garden serves as a reminder and living illustration of the herbs that were cultivated in Victorian times. Come for a walk in the garden to learn what grows there, how herbs were used in the “good old days” and the many ways they continue to enhance our lives even today. |
