| The Hilltop Garden Club was established in 1953 and has tended the Surratt House Museum Herb Garden since the museum opened in 1975. The garden first was planted on the site where the kitchen is now. When the Surratt Society and the Maryland-National Parks & Planning Commission reconstructed the little kitchen wing, the garden was moved to its current site near the spring house. Hilltop Garden Club members did extensive research on Victorian gardens and published a booklet, "The Mary Surratt House Victorian Herb and Flower Garden," when the garden was planted. The garden has been refurbished during the past three years. The Garden Club is a member of District 1 of the National Capital Area Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. This association is part of a national council of state gardening clubs. The club meets once a month except in July and August. Monthly programs include guest speakers on topics such as landscape design, flower arranging, conservation, and environmental control. A yearbook is published and there is an annual plant sale the first Saturday in May. New members are welcome. The membership fee is $15 per year. Individuals who are interested in joining the Hilltop Garden Club or who would like additional information may contact the Club by writing to the Membership Chairman, Hilltop Garden Club, 9514 Nottingham Drive, Upper Marlboro MD 20772 or calling 301-599-6476. The garden at Surratt House significantly enriches the interpretation of this place and time. The Surratt Society sincerely appreciates the beautiful garden and the Hilltop Garden Club's work to make this piece of history available to our visitors. |
