In 2009 Chris King, KCRA promotions producer, wrote, directed, produced,
and edited a short film (watermarkfilms.net) titled “The Killing of
Mary Surratt”. It debuted at the Sacramento International Film &
Music Festival on August 2, 2009. The film is 23 minutes in length and
addresses the question: “Was Mary truly guilty of the crime, or just
a busy mother and innkeeper in the wrong place at the wrong time?”
The film leaves it up to the viewer to decide but it ultimately reminds the
viewer of the dangers of mass hysteria, criminal profiling and trigger-happy
vengeance following a national tragedy.
Mr. King had his film accepted in over a dozen film festivals (it’s an
honor just to be accepted for these film festivals) in 2010 and won awards
which included: Best Drama award at the Cape Fear Independent Film Festival
in North Carolina; 3rd place trophy the Short Film Drama category
of The Indie Gathering International Film in Festival in Cleveland, Ohio;
and a finalist in the 52nd Rochester International Film Festival
in New York. [Each entry chosen for the Rochester International Film
Festival receives their distinctive Shoestring Trophy.] During 2010-2011
he will be working to make his film into a TV documentary. Mr. King was in
contact with the Surratt House Museum in preparing for his film.
